Cowley’s single two-bed trauma center has grown into a statewide network of nine (9) adult trauma centers and two (2) pediatric trauma centers, which, through the integration of EMS, trauma care, rehabilitation, and injury prevention, focus on the expeditious care of patients and the preservation of life and limb whenever possible. When an individual experiences a traumatic injury, receiving care within the first hour, or “golden hour” is critical, particularly when the injury is life-threatening. By law, the Board must meet at least six times per year. MIEMSS is governed by an 11-member Governor-appointed State Emergency Medical Services Board. How will Grand View Health’s Level II Adult Trauma Center provide care during the “golden hour?” The Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems is an independent, executive-level agency responsible for the coordination of all emergency medical services. While Grand View Health is an Adult Level II Trauma Center, children may be transported to our hospital for care and once stabilized, be transported to a Pediatric Trauma Center as needed. The Level II Adult Trauma Center at Grand View Health cares for patients who are involved in motor vehicle accidents, motorcycle accidents, industrial accidents, and farming accidents as well as those who have suffered burns, gunshot wounds and other incidents that produce life-threatening injuries. What type of patients does a Level II Trauma Center care for? While Level 1 Trauma Centers have trauma research and surgical residency programs, Level II trauma centers do not have this requirement. According to the PTSF, Level II centers must care for a minimum of 350 trauma patients each year. These trauma specialists work around the clock to stabilize and treat people with critical injuries. Level II Trauma Centers feature specially educated health care provider teams, including trauma surgeons and physicians trained in 24 different surgical and medical specialties nurses from across the continuum of care and allied health providers from many different hospital departments.
